AWANA
The goal of AWANA is stated in the pledge to the AWANA flag
recited at the beginning of each weekly meeting, "to reach boys and girls
with the gospel of Christ and train them to serve Him." This has been the
purpose of AWANA since it was founded nearly half a century ago. It has
also been the reason AWANA has been part of the ministry of our church
for 28 years. In fact, ours is the oldest active charter in Oregon.
The name, AWANA, is an acrostic for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed,
taken from the AWANA verse, II Tim. 2:15. The program
of games, handbook achievement (primarily scripture memory work), and
devotional times is directed toward leading children to trust in Christ and
building biblical values into their lives. A system of awards serves to
motivate the children to complete handbook work. In each of the past
several years we have seen young people receive the Timothy award,
indicative of handbook work including memorization of several hundred
scripture verses. God's Word is the foundation for lives lived according to
His will, and these young people have made it an important part of their lives.
AWANA Youth Association is also an international ministry. There
are AWANA clubs and AWANA missionaries in many countries
around the world. To encourage and support this international ministry
AWANA has developed the Adopt-A-Club program. AWANA clubs in
U.S. churches adopt clubs in foreign counties and support them with
prayer, encouraging tapes and correspondence, and financial assistance.
Our AWANA clubs here at Faith Baptist Church have adopted the
AWANA clubs in Vanino, Russia where the Dan Pollards serve as
missionaries.
Pray that God will use this ministry to reach boys and girls and
their families for His glory in the coming year.
